Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically placed beneath your gums into the bone. After placement, the implant fuses to the bone of your jaw and acts as an artificial tooth root. A dental implant may be used to support a single artificial tooth or several teeth. Because they are firmly anchored to the jaw bone, implant-supported artificial teeth provide the look, feel, stability, and function of natural teeth.

There are essentially three parts to traditional dental implants:

  • Dental implant components/Fixture – implant itself that is inserted into the bone
  • Abutment – a post that is connected to the implant and then sticks up out of the gum tissue to be used for a crown or bridge
  • Implant prosthetic – the actual tooth, teeth or denture that is cemented or screwed onto the top of the abutment to replace the missing tooth or teeth.

Dental implants truly are the solution for missing teeth. They can replace everything you’ve lost – from a beautiful smile to taste, to the ability to eat whatever you want. The secure fit also helps replacement teeth feel more natural than conventional bridges or dentures. Some of the additional benefits include:

  1. Allows you to speak and laugh naturally
  2. Helps to keep you looking younger
  3. Improved quality of life
  4. Preserves facial structure and helps prevent bone loss
  5. Your ability to taste may improve
  6. Prevents adjacent healthy teeth from being cut down

Whether you are missing one tooth or many, dental implants can be used to replace that which you have lost.

Like regular dental implants narrow body dental implants are made of titanium alloy. They cost significantly less than regular implants. Because narrow body implants are small, they may be suitable for patients without enough jaw bone density to support regular implants.

For denture sufferers who have lost most of the bone in their jaws, narrow body implants provide a solution. Unlike traditional dental implants, which often require a longer healing period and multiple visits, a narrow body implant supported denture often can be place in one visit that takes approximately an hour. The patient leaves the dental office with a solid denture and generally can begin eating the same day.

Part of being an expert on dental implant treatments is Dr. Matiasevich’s knowledge about one of the major categories — mini dental implants. These artificial tooth roots are simple solutions to tooth loss and have many advantages.

The difference between these and regular implants is the smaller size that makes it easier to insert and less invasive. These features also contribute to making recovery time shorter.

Benefits of Mini Dental Implants

Mini implants are the ideal solution for patients whose mandibular (jaw) bone structures are weak or corroded. They provide the support necessary to hold your dentures in place and rid you of the discomforts commonly associated with wearing removable dentures. It gives you more freedom to eat foods you like and can help you feel more at ease during social gatherings. Some additional benefits include:

  • Placement is relatively pain-free and less invasive
  • The recovery process is faster
  • Increases your confidence and allows you to relax in social situations
  • Allows you to speak and laugh naturally
  • Can last for more than two decades with proper care
  • Can support dentures or support a full replacement for missing teeth

Can you tell me more about mini dental implants?

Mini dental implants are a very cost-effective way to get implants, especially for denture wearers. We’re able to put those in on the same day and usually put the teeth on the implants at the same time. They generally cost anywhere from a third to a fourth of the cost of a traditional implant which is exciting because it makes it more affordable.

Generally, you need more mini-dental implants in the mouth to hold up a denture or to hold the teeth in, but occasionally you can get away with mini-implants if you have a partial denture or something just with one. Occasionally we can even use a mini-implant and attach a single tooth to it.

This is really exciting because it’s a very quick, virtually painless technology that we have that answers a lot of the in-between type of problems that we sometimes encounter in dentistry, where maybe somebody’s missing only a few teeth over here on this site and they have a denture and they’re losing a tooth. We can put a couple of mini dental implants in, reattach the denture and the patient is in and out of the office in less than an hour.

It’s a wonderful service. They hold up well. The first thing to do is just to find out whether you’re a candidate or not. Most people are generally for mini dental implants. It’s really neat.
